Each layer with six pod (or leaf) like shapes moves with the wind in opposite directions.
The imagery we chose for this piece comes from a quote by Captain Fredrick W. Beechey who, in 1826, described the view of coming into the area now known as San Mateo as “a wide country of open meadowland, with clusters of fine oak trees…” The idea of a large tree standing majestically in the middle of an open meadow represents the city of San Mateo standing strong against the wind. Individual citizens moving independently, yet together weaving a unified pattern, is for us a perfect description of a thriving community.
